DENTAL IMPLANT Q & A

1) What are dental implants?

2) Are dental implants suitable for me?

3) I have loose and annoying dentures. Can dental implants help me?

Absolutely! We can either replace your dentures altogether with a fixed set of teeth supported by implants, or as a simpler and less expensive measure, stabilise your dentures with a lesser number of implants so they are stable, much more comfortable and functional.

What if I suffer from advanced dental disease?

Ideally for simpler cases candidates are in good general health and have other healthy teeth and gums. However some patients suffer from hopelessly diseased teeth and/or gums. For many of these cases the only way to save their jaws and bodies from dangerous infection and debilitating pain is to remove their teeth altogether. Luckily in such cases hope is not lost, as the jaw becomes free of disease again following dental extractions and this provides a healthy foundation for a new set of functional and attractive teeth. Our practice specialises in these advanced cases and helps bring patients with advanced dental disease back to health again.

4) How many teeth can dental implants replace?

Some people are missing all their teeth and most of those are excellent candidates for dental implants. We also use implants to replace small bridges, removable partial dentures and even missing single teeth.

5) What are the benefits of Dental Implants over Dentures?

Dental implants are a very popular method of either stabilising or replacing dentures, overcoming many issues such as discomfort, friction against the gum, loose and embarrassing dentures, reduced function and shrinkage of the face and jaws bones.

Dental Implants offer:

  • A more natural and attractive smile
  • Comfortable and natural function
  • Stronger and secure teeth
  • A permanent solution for missing teeth
  • A reduction of speech impediments
  • Restoration and preservation of the normal shape of the mouth, jaws and face.
6) What is involved in the procedure?

  • A thorough assessment & evaluation by Dr Misagh Habibi to discuss the best method of treatment, cost options and a plan of action.
  • The initial stage of inserting the implants is often combined with specialist sedation dentistry techniques, to ensure the procedure is absolutely painless and comfortable. (1-2 hours)
  • 3-6 month healing period is often (but not always) essential for creating a secure base for your new teeth.
  • Finalising the dental implant procedure by attaching permanent and attractive teeth.
7) How do you use 3D imaging to plan dental implants?

Using Cone Beam or CT technology allows us to visualise exactly your jaw anatomy where implants need to be placed, analysing bone thickness and height, location of nerves, blood vessels, sinuses and other teeth etc. Because we utilise a lot of 3–D imaging for dental implant planning, our patients receive special rates arranged by the specialist radiologists of Perth Radiology Clinic (PRC)! In complex cases we also use world–leading 'SimPlant Technology' to virtually plan your surgery and its results before it is accurately replicated in your mouth. We have the technology and expertise, so why expect less?

8) What do I do during the healing period?

During the healing period of 3–6 months, temporary solutions will be made for the missing teeth. Various options are available and will be discussed with you in order to find the best solution.

9) What brands of implants and materials do you use?

Traditionally a couple of major implant companies have dominated the ‘market’ of implant dentistry, especially in Australia, namely Nobel Biocare and Straumann. However in the last 15 years new science and research has led to development of many advances in the field of implantology, and out of this new implant designs by other companies have been developed. Dr Misagh Habibi’s implant selections and use of other biologic materials are based on solid scientific research for the applications they are used for. For instance, he has introduced both BioHorizons and Bicon implants to Perth and assisted in educating referring dentists and patients on their merits on bone and tissue health, implant survival and the ease and practicality of restoration. On a case by case basis, Dr Habibi selects implants that are best suited for the function and aesthetics required to preserve the health of the surrounding bone and gum. Biologic materials used by Dr Habibi in implant surgeries include: MinerOss, Grafton DBM, BioOss, Alloderm, BioGide and Laddec.

10) What does it cost?

Dental implants are an important investment in your smile, confidence and comfort, providing a permanent solution for missing teeth. Every case is different depending on its own requirements. In general because we are able to see a case through from beginning to completion in our rooms, as well as our special Sleep Dentistry services, you will avoid the costs incurred in seeing different specialists and possible hospital bookings. Come and chat to the friendly team at our Dental Implant & Sleep Dentistry Centre Perth to find out what your options are, for your attractive new smile.

11) Does it hurt?

With Dr Misagh Habibi’s expert care and techniques, up to several dental implants are often placed painlessly under a simple local anaesthetic. Depending on your preference, our Dental Implant & Sleep Dentistry Centre Perth offers specialist sedation techniques that not only guarantee your dental implant procedure is painless but comfortable and deeply relaxing as well.

12) How do you know if I have adequate jaw bone?

We will need to assess your jaws by clinical and radiographic (X-Ray) examination to determine the amount, shape and quality of the bone in the intended implant site. At Perth Sedation Dentistry we utilise more detailed 3-D technology (such as Cone Beam Imaging technology or Dental CT Scan) to gain a great deal of information not available in normal radiographs.

13) What if I don't have an adequate jaw bone?

Adequate jaw bone is required to act as a secure base for the integration and retention of dental implants. Where adequate jaw bone is not present such as in cases of long term tooth loss, we can often carry out procedures to re-create healthful jaw bone. This is achieved through bone regeneration procedures called bone augmentation grafts and sinus elevation grafts. Dr Misagh will discuss all your options with you, during a no-obligation consultation. He often achieves results for patients who other professionals could not provide solutions for.

14) Are dental implants safe?

Dental Implants have proven a safe and predictable form of treatment over decades of use. Since their inception, developments and extensive research have been applied to dental implants, resulting in innovative improvements in design, longevity, prognosis and appearance. With our techniques we expect over a 98% success rate, long term. Not only are implants safe, they improve patients' health and often prevent unwanted health problems related to missing teeth and diseased teeth and gums.

15) What are dental implants made of?

Dental Implants are made from titanium, which your body's bone cells do not treat as a foreign substance. Titanium is also used in joint and hip replacements. Bone cells merge with dental implants in a process called 'osseointegration' and treat the implant as a part of your body.

16) What is the success rate?

Dental Implants have a proven high success rate when utilising modern techniques and experience. Our experience and philosophy show over a 98% success rate. Dental implant patients enjoy a remarkable improvement to their quality of life and a positive effect on their health.

17) Do all dentists provide dental implants?

Not all dentists are trained in implant dentistry. Dentists lacking sufficient training refer their patients to other dentists who are trained or to specialist periodontists or oral and maxillofacial surgeons. Perth Sedation Dentistry is a practice restricted to Oral surgery, implants and sleep dentistry. Dr Misagh Habibi is trained and experienced in all aspects of implant dentistry including: diagnosis, planning, implant surgery, bone augmentation and sinus elevation procedures, and prosthetic restoration and rehabilitation.

18) Do I need a referral for a consultation?

You can make a dental implant consultation directly with Dr Misagh Habibi, or if you are under the care of a dentist who can restore the crown (non–surgical) part of implants, you can be referred to our practice for the dental implant surgery. If you are being referred we request that you have an OPG x–ray of your jaw sent with your referral, or made available at your consultation.
